Going to the Atlanta Motor Speedway

I've been to quite a few races at AMS. I've been to the Winston Cup race and both the Busch and ARCA races too. The better race to go to if you don't like dealing with the traffic of the Winston Cup race on Sunday is to go to the Saturday race, and it is also cheaper, and you also get a better seat too.

I think that the best seat at AMS is coming out of turn 4 in the Petty grandstand, all of the seats there are elevated about 15-20 ft. off of the track. But I have sat 20 rows up so I could see the action down in turns 1 & 2, the seats here are great, you can see the whole track and you have a good view of the action in turns 3 & 4. the tickets there range from $85-$100. I haven't sat on the front stretch in the champions grandstand but I have seen the view from there, it's not all that great because you can't see the backstretch unless you are about 30 rows up. I have also sat on the backstretch, the seats were not all that great but you had access to get down next to the track right along fence when they are screaming at you going as fast as you will ever see the cars go on any track, and if you sit on the backstretch, I suggest that you go down next to the fence and feel the rush!

The food there like at all sporting events is expensive, and there's not much of a selection, there are plenty of restrooms from what I could see, never had to walk all that far to get to one, and they were big restrooms so there wasn't missing of the action on the track.

The worst thing about going to AMS is the traffic, there is really only 1 way to get there, and it is down a road that is 20 miles long, the track is about 10 miles off the interstate, the post race traffic is the worst because the GA state patrol doesn't know how to direct traffic even when they have 19% of the whole force there. If you park on the backstretch, good luck getting out, because the GSP will direct you down back roads that will get you lost unless you know the local roads like I do since I am from the Atlanta area and have local maps.

The closest lodging is about 5-10 miles away unless you are camping out there on the property, but I would say get a room in downtown for the scenery and it is only about 20 min. away from the track. and all of the happenings during the race weekend happen on the main BLVD. about 10 miles up the road from the track, all of the restaurants have some sort of promotion every night.
