Going to a Race at the "Rock"
North Carolina Motor Speedway
Rockingham, North Carolina

Outside Turn Two of the North Carolina Motor Speedway

Date: October 24, 1999
Race: PopSecret 400

Pictures: Views from Frontstretch, Views from Backstretch

Just found your site while surfing.  Enjoy it pretty good and have a few things to add to the review of the October 99 Popsecret 400.  If you get to the track about two hours before the start, you can get good parking and have time to visit the vendors and corporate displays.  This is a great time to get any free stuff the sponsors are giving away.  Forget about parking behind the back stretch because it is the last to get out after the race is finished.  I have personal knowledge of this as I took my kids to their first WC race in 98.  We sat in the then NEW backstretch grandstands in section 35 row 16.  The race ended about 3:00 and it was 8:00 before we got home.  I live in Laurinburg N.C. which is only 18 miles from the track on the back roads.  We literally had time to see another race if there had been one.

Other than that, it was great except Gordon won the Cup at that race.

In 99 we got the same seats and saw another great race.  This time we parked near turn three and were out within an hour after the finish.  My brother-in-law came up from Wilmington  N.C. (two hours away) and saw his first cup race and was home before dark.

I took my two boys ( 9 and 3) to the Busch race on Sat.  We were on the front stretch one section from the start finish.  Great seats, views, and lots of action.  It was even better because Martin won..  I recommend Rockingham to all race fans.  Tickets are reasonable and can be had right up to the green flag.  If you prefer to camp, there is lots of room and the facilities are very good.
